How to prepare your children for university life

Over the next few months, thousands of budding young students will head off to university to experience new adventures and learn new skills. Heading off to study full time away from home can be a little nerve-wracking for students and parents alike. If your little one is all grown up and preparing to leave for university, there are a few things you might need to help them with. Here is our ultimate 2018 university checklist to help you get your children prepared for life at university. Learning to cook One of the biggest worries for any parent watching their child leave home is whether or not they will eat right. Of course, there will be many takeaway pizzas and late-night snacks but it’s important that your kids know how to cook proper meals so they get all the nutrition they need to stay focused while studying. It may be too late to turn them into a seasoned chef but writing down recipes or buying them a cookbook are great ways to ensure that they won’t go hungry. Getting kitted out Starting a new life at university means that your children will need all of the tools and accessories to survive. Here are some of the things you’ll need to think about getting in advance. Kitchen accessories Kitchen utensils, pots & pans and tableware are all essential for any student planning to move away from home. Things like tea towels, cups and cutlery should also be added to the top of the list. Depending on what the student halls offer, you may also need to look into getting small appliances like a kettle and a clothes iron. Bedroom and bathroom There are plenty of things that your kids will be able to take with them from home such as bed sheets, towels and general décor. However, there are some things you may need to buy. Going through your own home and creating a list of essentials is a great way to ensure new students have everything they need. Washing up time Knowing how to wash up, clean the house and do laundry is another important part of being independent and living on your own which is why it’s a good idea to prepare your children for when they leave home. It’s no secret that university halls get messy pretty quickly so be sure to show them all of the different cleaning techniques that you’ve picked up over the years. Teaching them how to properly use a washing machine will also help them save money while studying away. Our Eco Eggs will save students from buying washing detergent every week. Budgeting One of the hardest challenges that university students will face, other than exams, is trying to budget their money. It can be a shock for many students when they find more money than ever before in their bank accounts so it’s important they know how to budget properly. Helping them work out a weekly shopping limit and teaching them how to plan monthly budgets will make sure they have enough to survive on throughout the entire year.
