Homemade Easter Eggs with the Mason Cash Bake & Create Chocolate Egg Making Set

It’s that time of the year again when we’re trolley dashing around the supermarket bulk buying (price increasing/size shrinking) Easter eggs to hand out to friends and family. It can be a little impersonal and a little bit expensive so we thought we’d have a go at making our own eggs for a change; using this nifty little set that we sell by Mason Cash – a brand synonymous with quality baking. Here’s how to do it:

What you will need:

  • 1 x Mason Cash Chocolate Egg Making Set (includes egg moulds, treat moulds and decorating pen)
  • Pastry brush
  • Bain Marie
  • Chocolate (around 150g per egg)
  • Any extras to add to chocolate for the treats or decorating (we used popping candy, hundreds & thousands and strawberry jelly)

What to do:

  • Melt ¾ chocolate in the Bain Marie and temper by adding the final ¼ off the heat and stirring until melted.
  • The egg moulds come with embossments that give a great affect if filled with a different kind of chocolate. We used white on one of the eggs and filled in the pattern with the decorating pen. Set it in the fridge for 5/10 minutes to harden.
  • Using the pastry brush, paint a layer of chocolate on the inside of the egg shell moulds and set in the fridge. Repeat until you get a good few millimetres of thickness.
  • Fill the treat moulds with melted chocolate/fudge/jelly/nuts and set in the fridge.
  • When everything is set, remove the chocolate eggs from the moulds and place your treats in the centre of the egg halves.
  • Seal the halves together using a thin trickle of melted chocolate from the decorating pen and set in the fridge for a few minutes.
  • Take them out and decorate however you like!
We were really impressed with the set, it created some smooth and pretty little eggs that easily pop out of the moulds and kids would love to be a part of decorating and filling with surprises; the popping candy certainly was a hit with the little ones! Layering up the chocolate on the shells could be a bit too time consuming for really young children in our opinion, so you might want to do that step before getting them involved if that’s the case. You could have lots of fun with the surprise fillings, some grown-up ‘boozy’ ones could be worth an experiment (definitely on our list for next time!).
