Make Your Small Garden Look Bigger: Outdoor Mirrors That Add Space and Light

Outdoor mirrors look great in any garden but they’re especially useful in small gardens, courtyards, on roof terraces and balconies. Increasing a sense of space, reflecting light in more shady corners and even giving the illusion of a window into another area. Here are some tips on how to use them to maximise your space and create focal points in your garden.

What to do

They can be hung anywhere – on walls, fences or trellises, but the key to getting the right look is to consider what you will be reflecting. The best spots are amongst foliage and open green space which will help with the illusion of more garden beyond. Indeed, the more plants growing around them the better; helping them to blend into the background will soften the overall look and not make them so obvious to the eye. A gothic mirror surrounded by ivy is the perfect way to give your home that extra touch of character.
However, outdoor mirrors can also break up the monotony of bare walls and unattractive fencing, so don’t be afraid to show them off by seating areas or more barren spaces if you prefer. This results in a ‘window’ illusion, leading to more space beyond or even a secret garden! If you have a water feature or pond in your garden then placing mirrors behind or beside the water will give you a delightful double effect that will highlight this area of the garden. Wherever you choose to place them, they will be sure to create a focal point.

What not to do

If you can, try to avoid the spaces of your garden that will reflect back only your properties less attractive features (drainpipes, electricity meters and compost heaps are not pretty!) and will ultimately give you a disappointing effect.
Also, be mindful of the height which you hang your mirror. Don’t place it directly in the path of the sun because of obvious fire hazards, they are extremely rare but better to be safe than sorry. If you live in a very hot country they are best to be avoided. Too high or on the bird flight path should be avoided as well, as it will not endear the lovely creatures to visit your garden often!
Lastly, ensure the mirror can withstand your weather conditions (namely rain if you’re in the UK like us!) by investing in a good quality mirror designed specifically for outdoor use.

The result: A beautiful and unique space

The overall look can be stunning and offer new, interesting dimensions to your outdoor space. Even better, as the pieces age and wear they just look more like they belong in the natural environment around them. Pick your favourite space in the garden for your mirrors to focus and add perspective, resulting in a beautiful look, unique to your home.
